Reliquary theca with relic of St. Bartholomew, the Apostle

Oval silvered metal glass-fronted theca housing the first-class ex ossibus relic of Saint Bartholomew, the Apostle. The relic is affixed to a red silk background surrounded by silver wire ornamentation and identified on a manuscript cedula label as S. Bartholom. Ap. (Saint Bartholomew, Apostle.  On the back,  the theca is secured by a seal of red Spanish wax with an imprint of a coat of arms of Cardinal Antonio Felice Zondadari (†1823), Archbishop of Siena (1795-1823). 

Saint Bartholomew was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. He has been identified with Nathanael who appears in the Gospel according to John as being introduced to Christ by Philip who would also become an apostle. His Feast day is celebrated on August 24 (Western Christianity) and June 11 (Eastern Christianity) and he is a Holy Patron of  Armenia; bookbinders; butchers; Florentine cheese and salt merchants; Gambatesa, Italy; Catbalogan, Samar; Għargħur, Malta; leather workers; neurological diseases; plasterers; shoemakers; curriers; tanners; trappers; twitching; whiteners; and Los Cerricos (Spain).
