Reliquary theca with relic of St. Matthew, Apostle & Evangelist

Oval silvered metal glass-fronted theca housing the first-class ex ossibus relic of Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist. The relic is affixed to a red silk background surrounded by silver wire ornamentation and identified on a fancy manuscript cedula label as Ex Oss. S. Matth. Ap. et Ev. (from the bone of Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist).  On the back,  the theca is secured by a seal of red Spanish wax with an imprint of a coat of arms of Cardinal Antonio Felice Zondadari (†1823), Archbishop of Siena (1795-1823).

Saint Matthew, also known as Levi, was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and one of the four Evangelists. He was a publican who, while sitting at the "receipt of custom" in Capernaum, was called to follow Jesus. Matthew is recognized as a saint in the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, and Anglican churches. His feast day is celebrated on 21 September in the West and 16 November in the East. He is also commemorated by the Orthodox, together with the other Apostles, on 30 June (13 July), the Synaxis of the Holy Apostles. His tomb is located in the crypt of Salerno Cathedral in southern Italy.
