Large theca with relics of Saint John Nepomuk, protector from floods and drowning

Large Baroque glass-fronted silver reliquary theca housing first-class ex cineribus (of the ashes)  relic of Saint John Nepomuk. The relics are affixed to a red silk background decorated with gilt paperolle ornamentation and identified on paper cedula label as Ex cin. S Ioa. Nep. (Of the ashes of St John Nepomuk). On the back, under a protective cap, the theca is secured with a perfectly preserved seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of a Catholic Bishop.

Saint John of Nepomuk ( John Nepomucene, Jan Nepomucký; Johannes Nepomuk; Ioannes Nepomucenus) (†1393) is the saint of Bohemia who was drowned in the Vltava river at the behest of Wenceslaus, King of Bohemia. Later accounts state that he was the confessor of the queen of Bohemia and refused to divulge the secrets of the confessional. On the basis of this account, John of Nepomuk is considered the first martyr of the Seal of the Confessional, a patron against calumnies and, because of the manner of his death, a protector from floods and drowning.
