1853 Documented reliquary theca with relic of St. Philip the Apostle

Oval silvered brass glass-fronted reliquary housing first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relics of Saint Philip the Apostle. The relic is affixed to the background of salmon color silk ground and identified in Latin on a typeset cedula label as S. Philippi A. (Saint Philip the Apostle). On the back, under a protective cap, the theca is secured with a perfectly preserved seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint with a coat of arms of Fr. Giuseppe Maria Pietro Raffaele Castellani O.E.S.A. (†1854), Titular Bishop of Porphyreon (1839-1854), Papal Sacristan and Assistant to the Pontifical Throne of Pope Gregory XVI. The relic is accompanied by the original matching authentics document issued by Fr. Castellani in 1853.

Saint Philip the Apostle was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus who preached in Greece, Syria, and Phrygia. In the Roman Catholic Church, the feast day of Philip was traditionally observed on 1 May, the anniversary of the dedication of the church dedicated to them in Rome (now called the Church of the Twelve Apostles). The Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates Philip's feast day on 14 November. He is a patron of Cape Verde; Hatters; Pastry chefs; San Felipe Pueblo; and Uruguay.
