Reliquary theca with relics of Saint Damian, the Unmercenary Healer

Oval crystal-fronted silver reliquary theca housing first-class ex ossibus (from the bone) relic of Saint Damian. The relic is identified on a cedula label as S. Damiani Med. (Saint Damian, Doctor). On the back, the theca is secured by a perfectly preserved seal of red Spanish wax with a clear imprint of a coat of arms of Fr. Enrique Laso de la Vega (†1729) Titular Bishop of Thaumacus (1728-1729).

Saints Cosmas and Damian († c. ad 287) were twin brothers, physicians, and early Christian martyrs suffered martyrdom in Syria during the persecution of the Emperor Diocletian. They were venerated as early as the 4th century, when churches dedicated to them were established at Jerusalem, in Egypt and in Mesopotamia. They are Holy Patrons of surgeons, physicians, dentists, protectors of children, barbers, pharmacists, veterinarians, orphanages, day-care centers, confectioners, children in house, against hernia, and against the plague.
